Okay this was not at all what I expected. Since I’ve stopped watching trailers, I really couldn’t see anything that happened in this movie coming. Seeing that it was a movie written and directed by BJ Novak, I shouldn’t have been surprised how good it was. Most folks only know him from ”The Office”, but I’m telling you now to check his rap sheet.
The story was original, engaging, and was absolutely honest in sense of modern human nature. The opening dialogue of the film had me feeling better about myself because it showed that “Oh thank God, it’s not just me”. The film really captivated how, as my father would say, we live in a “microwave age” and are too over stimulated. Everything has to be here now, quick, fast, and in a hurry. Everything is so influenced that it’s rare to find individualism and rarer to find your own voice. This movie does a great job addressing that. How we’re so quickly and subconsciously teetering between our own time and societies, that there is no track to keep.
BJ really did an excellent job in supporting cast members as well. Out the gate, Boyd Holbrook was just jumping out the screen with energy and intensity. I don’t know why, but as many movies as I’ve seen and loved with Ashton Kutcher, I always think “It’s just Kelso”. And he always shows me that he’s more than that. I appreciated Issa being in the film, but I truly wish she had more involvement. That’s a lot of talent only to be left to do the bare minimum she was only able to do.
All in all, it was an excellent movie and I highly recommend it.
“Heart sees heart”. Or “454” I should say.
